Brand Your Minecraft World: The Visual Guide

The Power of the First Click

When a player browses their server list, they are scanning for quality. A custom icon is your server’s handshake. It proves that your project is polished and professionally managed. Moving away from the default gray placeholder is the fastest way to grow your player base.

Critical Specs for Your Asset

Minecraft has a very specific “lock and key” system for icons. If your file isn’t perfect, it won’t load.

  • The Dimensions: Your canvas must be 64×64 pixels.
  • The Type: Only PNG files work. Avoid JPG or GIF.
  • The Shape: Always use a perfect square to avoid a stretched or blurry look.

Setup Options: Choose Your Method

1. The Firecone Dashboard (Easiest)

Our dashboard handles the technical file naming for you.

  • Head to your Firecone Console and enter the Server Properties menu.
  • Use the “Add Server Icon” tool to send your file directly to the server.
  • Pro Tip: You must Restart the server. Minecraft only “looks” for the icon during the boot-up process.

2. Advanced Branding with MiniMOTD

If you run a Velocity proxy or a Paper server, MiniMOTD is the best choice. It allows for modern RGB text and dynamic icons.

  • Storage: Drop your 64×64 PNGs into the plugins/MiniMOTD/icons/ folder.
  • Random Icons: MiniMOTD can cycle through a different icon every time a player refreshes their list. Just put multiple files in that folder!
  • Velocity Users: Always place your branding on the Proxy server. This ensures players see your logo before they even pick a sub-server.

Troubleshooting Checklist

If the icon isn’t showing up, check these three things:

  1. Lowercase Only: If you uploaded the file manually via FTP, it must be named server-icon.png. Any capital letters will break the link.
  2. The Client Cache: Sometimes your Minecraft game is “stuck” on the old look. Click the Refresh button in your game menu a few times.
  3. File Weight: Keep your image under 1MB. If the file is too large, the server might skip sending it to the player to save bandwidth.

Quick FAQ

  • Animated Icons? Java Edition does not support them. Stick to high-quality still images.
  • Bedrock Support? This setup is for Java Edition. Bedrock branding is managed through different server-list protocols.
  • Reboots? Yes, a full power cycle is required unless you are using a plugin like MiniMOTD which has a /minimotd reload command.

Where to find help

The best way to find help is to either join a community on the internet, or to search for a helpful plugin. And while we cannot help with joining any other community other than the Firecone one, we can help with finding great plugins via our blog post.
